Dragon’s Call

When Lara moved to Taipei, dragons were the last thing on her mind, as was everything else in the magical realm. It was true this was unusual, as she was a seer, a caretaker of the magical creatures most believed to be myth or fairy tale, but leaving home to teach English in Asia had been meant as a way of escape from all she knew. She had been trained at the New England Seer Academy to deal with all levels of magical problems, from wide spread sighting crises to troll and alien creature uprisings, yet the biggest problems she had faced since taking over the seership of her family estate were nothing more than trivial squabbles. Most considered her lucky to have inherited such a job, which was far less dangerous and demanding than the public caretaking jobs required of most seers, but Lara felt restless and increasingly annoyed at the problems her job required her to address. She accepted it as her fate, something she had always been reminded of growing up, but she wasn't sure she was ready to face such a life, and had decided to walk away from it. At least temporarily.

Lara knew when planning her move that Taipei would have inhabitants of its own in the magical realm. It was an island host not only to legendary Chinese creatures, but lesser-known fairies and a unique collection of beings tied to aboriginal Taiwanese culture, and a handful of creatures from Japan and other countries whose people had occupied the island at certain points in its history. Lara was curious about these creatures, but set on maintaining an indifference towards their presence. As long as she did not make an effort to look for them, they would remain concealed from her vision by spells used as a precautionary measure in large cities against renegade seers who walked outside the tight reign of the Universal Council and their unbending Laws. It seemed the perfect situation for Lara, and everything lined up for a few years of normalcy. At least as normal as it could get for a blonde haired, blue-eyed American joining the ranks of expat English teachers in Asia.

After two weeks of exploring, Lara knew it was time to get a job and a place to live. She found an apartment through an online ad, a German male and Canadian female seeking a roommate. The rent was reasonable and the location decent, so Lara made her move. When she arrived, the first thing she did was peer past any concealment spells for creatures the two potential roommates may have unknowingly brought with them from their native countries. Seeing none, she looked the place over, and after examining her room, paid Hans and Maggie a deposit. She moved her suitcase from the hotel later that day, and then went out to buy linens. When she returned to the apartment that night, it was dark and calm, the only sound in her room the steady traffic
